Sun Damage and Actinic Keratoses (AKs)

Actinic keratoses (Aks) are the rough scaly patches that appear on the skin, caused by excessive unprotected exposure to the sun. This can sometimes progress and lead to skin cancer if ignored and untreated. These Aks can become thicker and larger (hyperkaratotic). These in turn may progress to squamous cell carcinomas. Sometimes, an increased redness is noticed along with tenderness, some itching and burning. Without a skin biopsy, it can be impossible to distinguish an AK from a cancer. If left untreated, squamous cell carcinomas may go deeper in the skin, spreading to other parts of the body, possibly resulting in death. It is impossible to predict if an AK will turn into cancer, or at which point this might happen.

Treatment using Levulan and Blue Light (Levulan PDT Therapy)
This is a two-step process that utilizes a solution, which is applied to the entire face. It makes the Aks sensitive to light. At this point, the solution stays on for a predetermined time. In the second step, a special blue light is used to expose the areas treated in step one, again for a predetermined time. This light destroys the AKs, whether they are precancerous or not.

Frequently Asked Questions About AKs and Levulan PDT Therapy

Is there anything I can do to prevent future AKs?
Long term unprotected sun exposure is the most significant cause of AKs. Protection from the sun is a must. This includes protective clothing hats and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF of 15. Avoiding the mid day sun is also helpful.

What is the Levulan PDT system?
The Levulan PDT system is an advanced 2-step system using a topical lotion and light to destroy minimally to moderately thick AKs.

How effective is the Levulan PDT system?
This system has proven itself effective in clinical trials to clear AKs of the face and scalp.

What does the Levulan PDT treatment feel like?
There is a little bit of discomfort associated with the treatment but far less than other methods. Some of the following may be noted:
. Some stinging and burning
. Some temporary swelling and redness may occur after the light component of the treatment

What will I feel in the time between the topical solution being applied and activation with the blue light?
You may experience a tingling sensation. This means that the affected areas are reacting to the treatment-this is a good thing.

What precautions must be taken during and immediately following the treatment?
You must stay out of direct sunlight, wear appropriate protective clothing, and use sunscreen/sun block. You will also be advised re the use of appropriate moisturizers as the skin flakes off during the treatment process and post treatment skin care guidelines.
